I haven't seen this film but I'd like to, so I was wondering if the characters are hard to understand or not. I'm german and fluent in english, but when people speak with heavy accents it gets a little hard for me without subtitles.

If you have trouble with the accents, turn on the subtitles. Watch it for the first time without subtitles (more enjoyable that way.) Then go back and watch with subtitles to pick up anything you may have missed.

This was one of the first English-language films to feature English subtitles in English-speaking countries. Does that help answer your question?
