No mon, they go-in to ruin this one too, ya know.

Well, it looks like the remake has made it into production, and from the summer SAG ad below, it's not going to be pretty. Why couldn't they just call this other POS movie something else that wouldn't associate it with this great Jimmy Cliff vehicle. Rappers, hiphop & New York setting do NOT add up to a "remake", just another dog like "You Got Served."

A major motion picture company is looking to find a new star. In a remake of the film "The Harder They Come," Kimberly Hardin Casting will be conducting a search for someone to play the lead role. Candidate should be an African-American male, 18-23. Skills needed are rapping and some acting. ...

You're right; the question is should we even watch it? But I've a question for you, if you can help. When I saw THTC 30 years ago, I saw it as a double with another film, with many of the same actors, filmed in and around Kingston, half in English and half in Patois. Was I just od'd on ganja, or does this movie exist?! . . .any ideas what I saw? Thanks!

Were you out west by any chance? I was in the Northeast while THTC was in it's "midnight movie" phase. I went to a showing in Texas around 1977, and they did play a movie called "SMILE ORANGE" if I recall it had something to do with a tourist beach hotel. I remember it being very funny and taking all kinds of jabs at the waiters, the hotel trade, and especially the tourists.
Could this be the one you're thinking of?? There is NO info about the plot here on IMDB.

though this is six months after the last post, or seven, I believe cobra is right. Even before I saw his reply, I was thinking it had to be 'Smile Orange'. You might wanna check out a flik called 'Body Moves', I think, though it's not at the same quality level. Bout a small time boxer in Jamaica. It's actually funny to see this message thread because of why I'm hereat imdb right now. Encore just mentioned that they are showing THTC as the midnite movie on Friday. So as I was making a mental note to remember that, and because I come here regularly to see ratings and comments etc, I wanted to see what Smile Orange was rated and the comments. But as you obviously know, there is nothing more than very basic info. That left me wanting, so I came to THTC to checkit out. And now...the circle is complete.

Oh boy... "rapping and *some* acting."
This is going to be a goddamned masterpiece.

oh my god. this is going to suck horribly. just watched the original last night, what a great movie..

So when you said "ruin" you mean like when I watch the original it's going to be unwatchable because the movie itself is all mangled or something? I mean how exactly does making a remake "ruin" the original? The original does not cease to exist once the remake hits the screen, right?

People, let's just BOYCOTT the *beep* movie!

I've often thought about trying to organise a boycott via IMDb in order to take a stand against Hollywood for all the *beep* *beep* remakes they are churnng out, and this one in particular is as worthy as it's gonna get. The very fact that Hollywood is remaking this film goes against so much of what the film stood for when it came out, it's a *beep* joke. BOYCOTT IT!!!!!

While we're at it, let's BOYCOTT all other remakes (with the possible exception of The Departed, as Scorsese is a real filmmaker not a hollywood slave like most directors who end up doing *beep* *beep* remakes).

It seems that Hollywood have complatetly run out of original ideas and are exploiting the cinematic ignorance of the mass public by just rehashing old ones over and over again. I SAY BOYCOTT!!!! The reason they keep getting away with it is that people ARE going to see the *beep* *beep* remakes so let's BOYCOTT!!!!!

It's up to the real cineastes to put an end to this cinematic crime spree! BOYCOTT!!!!!!!!!!!

Pass this on, let's *beep* do this thang!
