The film Scarface wishes it was.

Ivan over Tony Montana anyday man (and I refer only to Scarface 1983, not the Paul Muni original)

I agree Tony Montana was sub-par in comparison to Ivan or Paul Muni's Scarface!

RIP Paul Newman 1925-2008. Words can't express how much you will be missed.

Apples and Oranges. Ivan was a good man turned criminal by a corrupt system, Tony was a hard core criminal from the get go with none of the virtues Ivan started out with.

Ivan I could empathize with; but with Tony, I couldn't.
Also: there is fantastic music in this movie!
And this movie has a genuine affection for its environment and people.
Scarface felt like De Palma loathed his subject and his environment and was only interested in him and his plight to put across a point.

Whilst it can be argued that Tony is a less sympathetic character due to his deep-seated immorality throughout Scarface, sympathy does become a struggle (at least for me) once Ivan starts to revel in his criminal reputation i.e. the photo shot sequence.

Scarface felt like De Palma loathed his subject and his environment and was only interested in him and his plight to put across a point.

I feel De Palma's intention was to reflect Miami's criminal underworld for its shallow, materialistic excess and horrendous violence. It seems unfair to imply Scarface is the lesser film because De Palma "loathed" the subject matter. Considering its depiction, as I've previously explained, then the negativite vibe you describe was Scarface intended portrayal.

I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not.
