He was not a doctor and the kid obviously recognized the connection with the stranger dissapearance and his blood in the barn before she ran away.

Anna gave the man in the barn her father's coat. When he felt through the pockets he came across the watch. Do you remember that he performed a magic trick for her with the watch?

Also, the policeman gave the father the watch before showing him the body.

That was very interesting. How sweet that a child would have sympathy and recognize the needs of another human being. I liked that part because I believe that humans are basically good and that empathy and helpfulness are somewhat inborn. She gave her father's coat to the man who needed it, the adult male who was interacting with her and giving her some much-needed attention. Did anyone else think these girls were left to themselves way too much of the time?
