Terence Malick's films, particularly "Badlands," which, coincidentally, I just bought tonight also.

Really, almost anything with Warren Oates, who in addition to "Badlands" and "Two-Lane Blacktop" was in "Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia," "The Border" and "Rancho Deluxe" (uncredited), all of which fit this vibe.

Try Detour, the 1945 classic Noir.

Totally agree with the OP on Convoy purely in texture, it felt very Peckinpah. I guess the Nicholson Keitel movie The Border comes to mind as well. Shocking Electra Glides director only made one movie.
