Let down by the ending? ***Warning spoilers***

Anyone else feel the film was marred by the downbeat but trendy ending?

Surely a better ending would have been to pull over the hippies for a 2nd time, give him back his drivers licence, then say *beep* it, throw away his badge and climb aboard the VW and make his identification to the hippies complete as he quits being a cop and joins them.

reply

The cop had the driver's license of his killer...so he would be caught.

reply

Unless the license fell out of his hand and it was never found.

reply

We saw him tuck the license into the bag / satchel on the front of the bike. So it probably would have been found.

No, I think the ending makes perfect sense the way it is. Earlier in the film John is a by-the-book kind of guy. He gives a fellow cop a ticket, he doesn't give a fellow vet a break. Then at the end, after all that he has gone through has given him a "eff-it" attitude, he pays for it.

I liked the ending to this outdated little film, it came kinda suddenly and reminded me a lot of how "Easy Rider" ended. They even show a poster of that movie as in some sort of foreshadowing.

You might not have been around watching movies in the 70's. The hero (when the hero was imperfect) almost always died at the end. See Billy Jack, etc...

Sig, you want a sig, here's a SIG-sauer!

reply

In the 70's audiences didn't want a happy ending, is that it?
