Christ, I've just watched this for the first time after hearing so many good things about it. I like Donald Sutherland, I like some of Nicolas Roeg's work but I have to admit, I found it really tedious and I didn't enjoy it at all, I wouldn't say it's the worst film I've ever watched but it wasn't scary, it wasn't jumpy, I found it to be very slow and way too arty and in places, a bit bizarre for a horror film.
Was just coming on to see what other peoples views were, but Christ, anyone who's dared to say anything negative about the film have been attacked by a pack of ravenous wolves. They're called dumbasses, unintelligent idiots, low lives etc, seriously, is there any need for this kind of hostility and childish name calling simply because they didn't enjoy this so called masterpiece? I've never known a site filled with so many hate filled, vicious and just downright nasty people as the IMDB, it's worse than Twitter.
Not everyone enjoys the same things and I enjoy a bit of healthy debate, but why do so many self professed hyper intelligent beings on here think it's acceptable to just go around verbally attacking anyone with a different view to thier own.
It's quite sad that so many people think liking or disliking certain films, is a measure of one's intelligence and integrity and that it's acceptable to cyber bully anyone with different tastes to yours.
Each to their own I guess; you are certainly entitled to your opinion and anyone who attacks you personally because of it is just trying to impose censorship. I do happen to think the internet has changed for the worse in the last decade or so, certainly since social media took off. In regards to IMDB I have noticed verbal attacks going both ways. It's not like one side is all sweetness and light.
That said, on the subject of the film some of use get exasperated because criticisms that are not entirely valid are levelled at it. Don't Look Now is often dismissed for not being scary, even though it clearly never was intended to be by the film-makers, at least not until the climax. Daphne du Maurier wrote gothic mysteries and that is what the film essentially is. It's not the film's fault that it ends up on top 10 horror lists and people are misled into thinking they are getting Psycho or something. I also think there is a disconnect between those who love it and those who hate it: it is an infinitely creepier experience second time around once you know how it all fits together, and I think those who like it generally are those viewers that have seen it more than once. When someone like me (who has watched it several times) debates someone like you (who has only seen it once from the sounds of things) we are actually debating a different viewing xperience of the film.
Fair enough, I see your point bud, i have seen the slander thrown from both sides myself, from a personal point of view I'd never really heard of this film until last week when I saw it briefly mentioned on a youtube video and it sounded interesting. As I say, I like Donald Sutherland and Nicolas Roeg but I just didn't enjoy this particular film. I only found out about the hype on here but after reading a few of the negative comments on the film, I actually felt sorry for some of the people posting thier views.
I think healthy debate for anything is good as not everyone has the same tastes and as you've said, people often get different viewing experiences for a variety of reasons. It just seems a lot of people use the IMDB to simply scour around and attack other people from the safety of thier keyboards. I think this site should be doing more to combat this if I'm honest. I've had some right arguments on here over the years simply because I've had an opinion about a film or show and people have come over and just ripped into me instead of engaging me in an adult conversation about why my views differ from thiers.
I'm 6ft 5 and by most peoples standards, a very big bloke, but I'm not a bully with it and never have been but some of the threats and names I've had aimed at me on here by people who are probably half my size is laughable. I was called a dumbass and an unintelligent prick and I was told I should stick to watching Disney films, simply because I asked why there was no English dub on the Spanish film Pans Labyrynth which I've wanted to see for years. The reason I wanted an English dub is that my eyes are not the best and I struggle to read small subtitles and therefore can't enjoy subtitled films as other people do. But the barrage of abuse I got was insane, i felt like a criminal for even mentioning it.
I just don't get the whole cyber bullying thing, if you can't do it to someone's face then why do it from hundreds of miles away sat behind a computer? Thing is, it's actually getting worse, Twitter is atrocious for it and IMDB is fast reaching those levels. It's quite sad as this is probably the best site in the world for keeping up to date with movie news, don't get me wrong, there are some genuinely nice people on here, it's just a shame there's so many idiots as well. :-(
I hear you, but dude... it's the internet. You shouldn't take those type of insults personally. The person insulting you doesn't know you. People get a kick out of making someone feel stupid... it's nothing new in this world. It makes them feel smart- powerful- etc. The internet is ruthless because of the anonymity. They can hide behind the keyboard so to speak. I'm a bigger guy as well, and often assume I'm getting dissed by some insecure teenager. I got completely attacked on The Cabin in the Woods message board... for saying the movie is more of a comedy than a horror. I felt it was more of a "Scary Movie" than a real horror film. The fans on that board completely went ape----. They called me "child" and what not. After a few months of my email blowing up- I had enough. Looked into the two users - theyre favorite things were WWF Monday Night Raw and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. This is who we're dealing with. Learned my lesson there.
Anyway- I feel u on this film. I also just watched it for the first time. A bit slow at times. But I couldn't help but be impressed by the photography- and how they managed to make Venice seem so empty. With films like this i gotta remind myself what life was like in the 70s. Don't Look Now and Rosemary's Baby are remembered for their creepiness- that gets under your skin subconsciously. Something about that blind lady is just flat out creepy. I'm still piecing it together. I really don't get why the girl in the red coat ended up being a dwarf. I plan on looking into it (why I came on here in the first place).
it definitely came off as a film that my friends wouldn't be able to sit through. I consider myself a film buff (I edit sometimes) - so I was really into the whole production aspect- and the cinematography- editing. Plus I've always been a horror/mystery fan. But- you're not insane for disliking this film. I wouldn't expect everyone I know to like it. It only bothers me when people come on here and make a thread saying "this movie is complete trash! Don't waste your time!" With no reasonable criticism. The only criticism I personally have for this movie is the pacing. When he thought he saw his wife with the two older ladies-- and was investigating - that just seemed pointless to me. Or at least - too much time was spent on it. It seemed like 20 minutes were devoted to that plot point - that was ultimately irrelevant.
But - I gotta catch myself and view it objectively. It's an impressive film. Succeeded in creeping me out. Had an awesome setting. And visually- it was interesting. Gothic- nightmarish- even surreal. With that being said- I consider it a great - unique film. I would have to agree with someone who says it's a classic- given the context of its release (1973). Movies today struggle to do what this film did. And that says a lot.
What you are describing is not exclusive to this film's board. 95% of the people who post on this site are not only rude, but borderline psychotic. That's regardless of whether they love or hate any given film being discussed. It's one of the chief reasons I've gone from posting here several times a week to a couple times a month at most.
