I believer you're thinking of the 1980 movie "The Changeling" starring George C. Scott. I remember it because my brother and I snuck into it to see it. Scared the **** out of us.
shareI know EXACTLY what movie you are thinking of. It is called "The Haunted" made in the early 1990s. It is the supposedly true story of the Smurl family hauntings. In "The Haunted", only mom hears the water splashing around upstairs -- for a while, only mom hears anything.
Typical invincible poltergiest haunting type story.
