They are re-releasing the DVD through Warner Archive, BUT...

I'm wondering if this will be an online order-only thing or if it will make it to retail stores; the cover certainly looks professional and not as generic as the original DVD Archive version. I was browsing Amazon earlier and saw the original Warner Archive DVD selling for anywhere from $60 - $999 (yep, a thousand bucks) from individual sellers and I was PISSED because I'd really like to see this movie in light of the remake. But yeah, I just thought I'd put this out there so people know that they are giving it another chance, and it's gonna be remastered and a "special edition" (which hopefully means some bonus materials). Not sure what the release date is, though, no info has been announced on that.

No, this movie won't be released to mass market retail. It's like an on-demand pressing that the studio does onto a dvd-r. You order it from them and they'll press the flick onto a dvd-r. From what I hear it's a decent copy of the movie, but of course, still on a dvd-r. That one looks like a slightly redesigned picture of the Archive release. Amazon sells lots of bootleg dvd's too. Somebody probably bought it and copied it and is now selling it on their own.

It's still a made-to-order DVD-R, but it has better picture quality and even a commentary track.

I ordered the DVD through Amazon and got in 2 days from Kentucky (I live in Oregon), so it was pressed and shipped really fast. The movie looks great and the packaging is professional, though I wish there was some more special features. A commentary by Kim Darby would be delightful. I've heard complaints that since it's a DVD-R that it won't last more than 2 years, but I frankly don't know what people are talking about. I have a bootlegged DVD-R of the Halloween 6 Producer's Cut that I've had for probably 10 years and it still plays just fine. No clue why people seem to think DVD-Rs have such a short shelf-life.

It depends on the quality of the brand of DVD-R being used. I have great quality DVD+R and DVD-R discs that have lasted many years, but also low quality ones that lasted barely a year. The risk of buying these made-to-order discs is you never know the quality of the discs they use.

Since you have the Remastered Version, can you tell me if the film begins (as it should) with a scary musical "sting" while presenting the Lorimar credit, before proceeding to the main theme, showing the cat? The previous Warner Archive edition omitted it, and only the VHS still has it.
