The Day of the Jackal (1973) vs The French Connection (1971)
which is better?
shareDifficult for me to choose, both fine stories with excellent scripts. I rewatch both movies every couple years.
But Jackal didn't have Gene Hackman's impressive acting performance.
So Connection I guess.
Earl the mechanic - I've checked everything in this vehicle except the rocker panels
Popeye Doyle - WHAT THE HELL IS THAT EARL!
French Connection.
Day of the jackal just feels kind of sanitized and bloodless.
Really? It's a non-stop cat and mouse game. It's an excellent, edge-of-your-seat thriller.
Personally, I love it a lot. It's not as gritty as French Connection, but it's an international, globetrotting, affair the likes of which few movies could rival. It also laid the groundwork for games like Hitman, with the Jackal taking on multiple disguises and utilizing odd everyday objects as tools for subversion and to carry out the hit. It's an excellent film from top to bottom and I was never bored once.
The whole thing with the jackal just lightly touching people and it kills them was goofy. The ending was also lol-worthy.
As far as classic spy/espionage movies go, this is towards the bottom of the pile.
Love TFC, but I consider TDotJ a contender for top of the heap of 70s political thrillers, a decade chock full of great ones, maybe even GoAT in that sub-genre.
shareTDOTJ is better.
