WHAT IF HE HAD KILLED DE GAULLE?
And still been killed himself. What would have happened next?
shareI think the OAS goal of having De Gaulle killed and throwing France into chaos probably wouldn't have played out the way they wanted- even though the authorities didn't know the real identity of the Jackal it didn't matter because they did have clear proof that the OAS was behind the plot. Remember that the OAS tried to call off the Jackal when the plot was found out by the authorities but failed. It stands to reason that the government authorities would have brought out many of the pertinent facts behind the case to the French public to put the OAS into as bad a light as possible as the ones responsible for the assassination of De Gaulle the French hero. Even if there had been public sentiment for keeping Algeria French I think an assassination of De Gaulle by the OAS would have backfired any attempts at receiving legitimacy and respect from the majority of French citizens.
shareAt that point it probably wouldn't have served much purpose. The OAS was more or less destroyed after Bastien-Thierry's execution; even hiring the Jackal was equivalent to a chicken running around with its head cut off. Forsyth makes it look like the OAS thought they still had a chance of success, but by 1963 it seems killing De Gaulle would have been nothing more than going out in a blaze of glory.
"Lola, I love you, you selfish bitch!"
That's true, as the prologue mentioned the OAS was on their heels and had been weakened by the time they hired the Jackal for one more try at some glory.
shareDe Gaulle would have become a martyr like Jack Kennedy did. His achievements
would have been blown out of proportion and people would have been caught up
in a messiah mythology about him, dreaming of "what a better world he would
have made for us" just like the masses of Kennedy fanatics did after '63.
Correct. It is inconceivable that the French Govt would not have a disaster plan in place for what to do in the event of CDG getting killed. Massive police presence, reassuring news broadcasts and a transition to a successor.
The film is great, I love it, but it's totally unrealistic. The OAS would have needed to have known exactly when CDG was going to get killed so they could have been on standby to attempt a coup then. As it was, say he shoots CDG at 6pm, it would realistically be the next day before the head of OAS could have heard of it, met, worked out a response and ordered an uprising, by which time there would be a huge police presence around tv stations etc etc
