Perhaps he intended to discard his crutches and use both legs to run away? In the novel he spent some time working out an escape route from the apartment building. And Colonel Rodin tells his cronies that it would not be terribly important for their hired killer to make a successful getaway, because even if he were apprehended after the assassination, the OAS would liberate him when they seized power.
