Police Investigation no bearing on result

Ultimately the Jackal made a number of mistake's , but to all intent's they didn't really matter, I suppose like real life it all came down to asking the copper at the fence has anyone come through. The identification of the Jackal, the murder, the stolen car etc didn't really bring the police any closer and it was just bad luck at the end of the day.

Actually, the investigation led Lebel (based on the Jackal's arrival in Paris) to correctly assume Liberation Day would be the target date, which narrowed the possible sites to only a few. Had they not tracked him, and had no clue to his whereabouts, or intentions, security might not have been strengthened, as it was, and Lebel himself might not have been so personally involved, or even on the case. At the end of the day, it was Lebel's detective work that saved de Gaulle. Without it, the Jackal would surely have succeeded. Yes, it was a close finish, but pure luck did not determine the outcome.
