weakest aspect of this film...

... is that it's only an emergency because de Gaulle refuses to alter his appearance schedule. Why would he continue to go about in the open air even though he *knows* there's an assassin loose in Paris? It's one thing to not cower to mere threats of assassination, but by the end of the film, it's a certainty.

To a certain extent, today's Front National could be considered a continuation of the OAS, basically French who were more right-wing than the Gaullists.
France was quite unstable and its institutions fragile. Although the police had the OAS well infiltrated, the OAS was not without resources and it is quite plausible that they would have been able to get someone like Denise close to one of De Gaulle's advisers. If they had succeeded in killing De Gaulle, they might indeed have come to power.

A number of foreigners including a right-wing Hungarian refugee were involved in the Bastien-Thiry failed attack, and the Gaullists used this because they were at war with the OAS over who was the true France. By 1963, however, the government would have preferred to convey the message that the OAS was more or less defeated and everything was normal, so that would have been another reason for suppressing news about the assassination plot and having De Gaulle carry on as normal.

Yep, as others have said, this is a bloke who defied the Nazis while they tore his country apart. He won't be shown to cower down to terrorists, and home-grown political terrorists at that.
