Mme's Demise in the book was far worse. The character was far fiestier and aggressive.

Her son was graduating perhaps from military school, I believe. Her son's friends thought she was very attractive. Her age-defying figure was the result of riding her horse daily to keep loneliness at bay.

Her husband was in Paris, catching up with the youth he lost while fighting with the resistance during WWII. He met his future wife while fighting with the Resistance. She was younger than she.

In the book, the letter she was reading was from a young woman telling her that SHE would be the next Mme. Montpellier.
