1 - I imagine that yes he would expect to get the rest of his payment if he succeeded.
2 - By shacking up with a man, it might throw the authorities off. He already used a woman earlier so his thinking would be that they would not expect him to be hiding out with a man this time around.
1. Yes, it's about the money but also about the challenge. He's shown hesitating at the Italian border. He knows the caper is blown and he'll keep his advance, but he decides to continue.
2. By shacking up with anybody, he avoids being shown on any hotel registry cards, which they show a motorcycle courier collecting. I think the scene where the cabinet members call Detective Lebel back has them saying he "simply disappeared." He did that by not staying in any hotel under any identity.
Finding a man to stay with does give him that extra bit of unpredictability and helps him disappear off the radar, although he could just as easily have found a woman.
