A couple thoughts
How did Charlie know that the killer would go for banker first rather than him? He just made a lucky guess?
People say the whorehouse scene is gratuitous. I thought it worked because it's part of building the world of the story. Where there's a little town like Tres Cruces with its tiny bank and timid employees and there are disused cars all over. Where there's acres and acres of empty space except for the rocks and shrubs. Where there are tiny trailer parks run by old British dames. Where there are airports where nobody pays attention to anything and there are more old cars rotting. And so on. It's all part of the milieu.
