Yes, but in 1973...this didn't do all that great either.

It needed some years -- and cable, and VHS ..to find is audience. The plot remains simplicity itself -- the Mafia sends a great big brawny killer to kill Charley Varrick and recover the mob money he accidentally stole...and Varrick must defeat that killer using brain, not brawn...using his wits...which he does in an ending of perfection. And there is also this "mean side-bar": Varrick actually sets the killer upon other of Varrick's dangerous antagonists...to kill them.

Different era and style

I watched it a few weeks ago. I was never bored. I loved it. I bought it on Amazon without knowing much about it because it stars Walter Matthau. The blu ray has a lot of great features, too.
