I saw this a while ago so I don't remember it too well...

I remember really liking this film but I couldn't understand why Varrick went to get those photos taken. He spent a load of money, was he only going there to throw the Mafia off his trail? I mean, he never went back there.

He wanted the Mafia on his trail!

It was his plan all along, he knew that shady people have a tendency to turn people over for money. This knowledge, to think like they do, helped him in constructing his master plan.

He knew that by giving his name (more importantly Sullivans name and address) to these characters that Sullivan would be hunted down. This is why he was hiding in the grass, to get a good look at the hit man and what he is driving.

What is genius is the WAY he did it in the movie, when he talked to Tom (gun shop) he said that he needed papers quick. That might not be enough to get the mob on his trail,Varrick was about to leave the shop when Tom asked "Is there anything else I can do for you?" Which Varrick told him about fencing hot money. THIS is enough information for Tom to conclude that he is the bank robber and inform the mob directly.

Papers, would conclude that a person was on the run, but that could have been anything and might not have been a strong enough lead for Molly to follow.

The fact that Varrick was about to walk out of the shop without giving the gun shop owner any more info than needing papers always gets me. Like Varrick knew that Tom would ask him if there is anything else he could do for him.

"You sent us to guard the wrong man Mr. Chalmers."
