An inspiration for films such as Drive and No Country for Old Men
Charley Varrick is awesome. One of the best gritty, cynical action pics to come out of the 1970's, a decade full of gritty, cynical action pics. Elements of the plot can be felt in No Country for Old Men (a guy accidentally comes into a small fortune and is then aggressively pursued by a ruthless hitman) and Drive (a man robs a place that he later learns was a mob front, and the mob wants its money back). Matthau is great as Varrick, Andy Robinson is excellent as his sidekick, Joe Don Baker is awesome as the hitman after the money, and the car vs. crop-duster finale is amazing. This is one of Don Siegels best films.
Fans of No Country for Old Men, Drive, or gritty crime/action movies in general owe it to themselves to check out Charley Varrick
