William holden looks way................

I thought William holden looked like 70 years old during this movie. He looks way older than his age(55) when this movie was made. Is it only me? he aged badly.

I thought William Holden looked a bit older than his age, around 65. But he was still handsome, I've always thought of him as handsome.

I didn't think he and Kay Lenz had a great onscreen chemistry though. At times the dialogue sounded forced.
But the film was...OK. The cinematography was gorgeous and the music was beautiful.

"Didn't he discover America?"

This movie is pure sleaze induced male ego-fantasy. How could a pretty and nubile girl fall for this wrinkled and dissipated old codger. His voice cracks at every breath and he just looks and acts like a dirty old stodge.

The movie wasn't believable or acceptable. And i agree, he looked like crap for his 55 years.

reply

yes....better to remember William Holden in "Picnic" as the stud he once was.

People weren't as superficial then, especially not countercultural people. The point is that she sees the whole person, not just the surface, and likes that whole person.

reply

I love him but he didn't take the best care of his health. Though he had nice muscles in Picnic.

"Joey, have you ever been in a Turkish prison?"

reply

He had the muscles in "Picnic," and his bod was in decent shape here, but his face told the story of some hard living.

reply

He also had nice muscles with a small waist in Sunset Blvd and Stalag 17.

The creep factor is high on this film. The age gap did not stand the test of time from when it was filmed. I look at her and she looks 16 years old, and he looks 66 years old. I'm younger than Holden was in this film by 7 years, and sorry, but she just looks way too young for me, let alone him. If that were my daughter, I'd be pissed.

reply

That was part of what Breezy was about, not considering the outside, but just the inside.

The movie is incredibly dated, and is worth watching as a retro curio piece, for me.

reply

Funny, I am now exactly the age Holden was in this movie, but looking at him on the screen I think, "damn, that dude looks 40 years older than me." (It's not like I am some vision of eternal youth, but I sure as hell do look way way younger than Holden -- likely due to the fact I haven't been smoking two packs a day ever since I was 15.)

And he certainly does ACT like he's in his 70s.

The very first thoughts of any usual divorced 55-year-old, if a smokin-hot, rockin-body 18-year-old started hitting on him, would be:

1) I want to see the birth certificate. The sweet young stuff may be incredible but it ain't worth spending 20 years in jail.

2) Is this some kind of trap or scam? Is she trying to take me for all my money? Is she on the run from some criminal charges, etc etc?

3) Is she seriously diseased (physically or mentally)?? Off you go to the doctor for a complete checkup, honey.

4) ASSUMING all of those things check out as OK -- it's go time, Holden. Grow your hair out a bit. Do lots of push-ups and develop that upper-body strength. Eat lots of bananas. Talk to your doctor about a bonus Viagra prescription.

It's the style, the clothes and haircut. He looks in his 50's.
All this talk about drinking and smoking is silly.
What you see today in movies is massive make-up and special effects.
