When they have the round with the 3 answers , why is Richard Dawson picked first? The hardest answer would be the last answer to get. You would think that if Richard Dawson were so great, they would pick him 3rd.
Richard gives the most consistent answers, you want to get the 500 dollar answer, so why not try to get the best answer first? Then i'd likely go Charles and Brett as sometimes they pull out the best answer if Richard flubs it.
I respectfully disagree. Give Richard the more challenging role. The best should have it the hardest. If the clue is New York _, wouldn't it make more sense for one of the others to go first if Richard were so great? Obviously the first person is going to say New York City.
The point isn't to get the 3 answers, it is to get the number 1 answer. Let Richard use what he was best at: giving the consistent answer.
The first person might say (They wouldn't on match game, maybe butch chuck if he was in a playful mood, but this is just a hypo.) Giants, Mets, and so then that influences what others said and maybe he shoots out Yankees.
You pick Richard to get a good answer, pick the others to verify or find one he missed. Why make his job 'hard' you're not testing him, you're trying to get yourself in a position to win 5gs in the 70s.
naturally the correct answer...provided he wasn't doing shtick or giving out awards, making hats, drawing things, etc --- which means you have about a 50:50 chance he's going to help you not do a routine.

I totally agree. When I first started watching the show, I thought to keep Richard as the anchor, but I found out that when contestants actually did, I wouldn't be able to guess which of the three answers was the best one if Richard was last.
Dawson may have been a bit of a jerk, but he had an uncanny ability to guess the best answer in the survey of previous Californian studio audiences. He also tailored his super match answers to the actual contestants based on race, sex, or apparently even intelligence.
So if the clue was THANK ___, you would not guess THANK YOU? No way, let Richard pick the last answer and be tested to get the most obscure one. The one perceived as the best should be the one that is challenged . Then all the idiots clap in the audience as if there is a skill to say THANK YOU.
again, why do you need the obscure answer? What purpose does that serve? Seem you just want to see how good Richard really was instead of winning a chunk of change.
The point of that round is to pick the answer most frequently given by a previous studio audience, kind of like Family Feud. So if the clue is THANK ____, most people would say YOU, and then you win the $500. If you pick something obscure then it's not going to be the most given answer and you won't win any money. Since Richard was pretty good at picking the most common answer why not pick him first? Plus it gave the women a chance to go over and kiss him when he gave the right answer!
But the point is, anyone can give the obvious answer, so give it to the less consistent players, and if Richard is the best(which I don't believe he was)let him be last in case the first two do blow it.
Common sense, but not too many Match Game contestants seem to have had it. Even the ones that claimed they faithfully watched the show would often miss the basic answer of "boobs," or whatever.
Definitely some good points for picking him last. The kind of unwritten rule on the show was if you matched the celebrity for the $500 answer you would pick them for the bonus round so if you saved Richard for last he answer most likely would not be picked. So in the bonus round would you snub the celebrity who gave you the correct answer in lieu of Richard. I also think so many contestants picked Richard first, that it just became a natural thing to do.
