Answers are SO dated!!

I just recently got Game Show Network and have been watching reruns of Match Game whenever possible for the last month. It's one of the shows I remember watching when I was little although looking back you'd think it was a little risque for a grade-schooler.

Anyway, I'm loving the reruns but I'm finding it's harder to play along now because of how times have changed. A response that would seem obvious today would have been unheard of then and vice versa. I'm thinking of a particular episode I just saw where the contestant was playing the Bonus Round and the question was "________ X". My very first thought was Malcolm X but he wasn't even top three at that time. The number one answer was Madame X and the others were Brand X and something else (I wouldn't have come up with any of those).

Don't get me wrong, I really am enjoying watching the show, I'm just thinking that it doesn't hold up very well over time.

Some answers are and some answers are not.

It was 30 (+/- some) years ago.

The real change was seen on "Game Show Marathon" when Betty White was obviously from a different time than the other panelists.

"Match Game" is still a classic. Most questions do not use specific people so not everything is unknown to a younger audience.

But, you are right, a lot of stuff is unknown now.

Of course its dated. Thats what makes it fun. All you need to do is look at the set to see its dated. I like it cause of its cheesieness. I also get a taste of the 70's, since I wasnt alive then....

Guess I am showing my age cause the first thing I thought of was Madame X.

When I watched the other day I first thought of Brand X. (I did think of Madame X second). I never did think of Malcolm X. I wasn't born until 1973, but I used to watch Match Game when I was very young. My aunt and grandmother watched it all the time and so did I.

The fact that Match Game is from the '70s is what makes it fun. It surely doesn't look like anything on television now. Thank God.

When most of the new GSN shows come on that's my signal to turn the channel.

I know what you mean. The other day the Bonus Round question was "Kevin _______". Every answer that came to me -- Costner, Kline, Spacey, Pollack -- was unheard of back then. I didn't really get their answers, either.

Yeah, of course, now there are even newer answers you could use that you couldn't use then. For example:
"Blank" Park.

What is the most obvious now? Jurassic, of course, but at that time there was no book or hit film so you couldn't use it. Had to use MacArthur or Central.

"Blank" Park

Funny! I think of "South" Park :-)

I think that's part of the fun, seeing how much things have changed (and in some cases how things have not changed at all).

I was watching an episode this morning (Match Game '75). One of the contestants said that his wife was pregnant. I realized that that fetus is now a 35-year-old.

Yikes
