Was there something specific in the70s that Gene and Marsha Wallace would parody/reference with their bit about repeating each other's name overand over?

Gene had such an individualized rapport with the celebrities that always clicked. How the heck do you warm up Scoey Mitchell? He did it.

It came from a parody of a popular commercial.... romantic couple keeps saying each others name over & over, while staring face-to-face. I think the generic names were John/Mary, John/Mary.
