Pathetic censorship

I saw the first episode of this on UK Comedy Central yesterday. At the end of the show when Chrissy telly Robin she told Mr Roper "you were a poof" the word "poof" was silenced.

Is any homosexual watching actually likely to be offended by a character in an almost 40-year-old sitcom using a word that is still common in 21st century parlance? I seriously doubt it.

That's nothing, they've actually cut whole scenes from some episodes. They cut a scene where Larry was talking to Mr Roper because there was a poster on the wall of a near-topless woman! They've cut a scene where Robin gives bikers a 'V' sign, cut a scene where Robin brings a girl back to Larry's flat in another episode. I'd be surprised if there is an episode they haven't hacked to bits in all honesty. They even censored Mr Roper referring to the French as 'frogs'. As you say, pathetic.

And thinking, watching it again after years from a satellite channel in Italy, I was surprised since it seems so open about sex! In that series and later in "George & Mildred", they often referred to gay people or to "male performances".

The first episode has the dubbing thrace ruined, so it was in original language subtitled in Italian and I haven't noticed this censorship. Now I'm curious to watch it again...

I'm agree with you about such a censorship regarding clichés on gay and foreigner people, even if I'm much more disappointed when it happens in current programs.
For example, our Italian TV is a shame for many reasons. But it even censored some main scenes, going live the movie "Brokeback Mountain"" (and made other shameful censorships...)

One thing I remember about this show was the rude visual pun in the closing credits - there was a graphic of two toy cats and a rooster (think about it!).

Censorship? Crazy..This programme was totally inoffensive and always good natured in its humour. Why don't the censors tackle the trash known as eastenders which is violent rude and always full of shouting ....man about the house is brilliantly funny...even funnier than when I first saw it when it originally came out.. (oops. ..came out. .nudge nudge....!!)

i am gay and find that term offensive, but i also realise that it was 40 years ago when it was made and back then being gay was not accepted so terms like that was said. no it should not have been edited out but again its still not a nice thing to hear.

There should be a law compelling all films, TV repeats and radio repeats to be shown totally uncut regardless of watersheds, adverts, complaints or anything else.
