In the pilot episode Norman takes fresh flowers to her grave. As he comes away, the camera showed a shot of the tombstone. Date of death is clearly 1971. Does anyone know positively what the date of birth is? At first I thought it was 1900, but when I've looked at it again, I'm not sure. The "9" in 1971 is definitely carved differently. I don't even think that the "1" looks the same. The birth year looks to have been carved at a different (earlier) time.

I've been wondering that as well! But something tells me it's not 1900 because that would have made her 71 at the time of her death, and Clegg (Peter Sallis) was only in his early fifties when the show started. Even if his character was older, he couldn't have been much more than 60 because he had just retired. I thought it looked like 1920 (Peter Sallis was born in 1921). Maybe Mrs Clegg died early ... Sorry, but I'm as puzzled as you are!
