Worst program ever?
Where are the jokes?
shareI know this was posted awhile ago, but it brings up an important thing about shows like this, like how it's just not for everyone. I know we all say "to each his own," but you love it or you don't, because it's not a cookie cutter that you can be mid-way with.
Hope that makes sense. :)
~ Maybe the Hokey Pokey "is" what it's all about ~
If you look into a mirror you will see the biggest joke.

I would say it's a subtle humor but at the same time, they go for pretty broad laughs sometimes when using slapstick. For instance, I remember an episode in which Compo was in a canoe that was being lowered into the canal by a backhoe that Wesley didn't know how to operate. (That's the obvious solution when Compo is nervous about stepping into the canoe on the water after falling in the last time, isn't it?). Pure slapstick. Or the one with Smiler getting drunk. It's like live action Loony Tunes in places. But along with that, it can be very subtle. I once read that Brian Wilde, who played Foggy, described it as more of a "smiling show" than a "laughter show". It's relaxed, laid back viewing. It's evident that it's not everyone's cup of tea. But for me, along with the fact that it's very peaceful and comfortable viewing, a lot of the humor comes from the situations the characters are in as well as little witticisms and observations on life, particularly from Cleggy, who is my favorite character. Also, the men's and women's stereotypical attitudes about each other are pretty funny, especially when contrasted in later episodes with Glenda's and Barry's "progressive" views.
Later on, I think the show did miss some of the best supporting characters as the actors passed on. Wesley, Edie, and Eli were all big losses when the actors passed on.
'Irregardless' is not a word
