i'm sitting here now watching LOTSW, and i've tried a few times, but it has to be the least funny thing, well, ever. the comedy is just so lame. it would be better as a soap (like coronation st.) without the laughter in the background.

I don't get it, either, and find it almost unbearably dull, but my husband adores it and hardly misses an episode if he can help it. We are sitting and watching it now (well, HE is - I'm online :) and I asked him what he sees in it. He says partly it's the humor of these old men getting up to mischief like a group of little boys. Clearly it's not a question of one's continent of origin, as he's Central American and it certainly has enough North American fans that our stations continue to air it.
shareWell, it might be what episode you started watching. I started with "Wheelies" and I still think it is the most hilarious episode I have seen. I have certainly seen episodes I would rather not have wasted my time on, but how can any long-running show have every single episode be gold? If you like talky humor, you might try an episode from season 1 or 2 (1973-1975). I think most of the episodes when Foggy returned (1990-1992) have some good sight gags. I haven't watched the last couple of seasons, though.

As an American who has to put up with a lot of brainless sitcoms over here, I absolutely LOVE to sit back with a warm drink & enjoy an episode of LOTSW.
It a simple show with familiar beloved characters.
When stress of the real world gets outta hand, I would love to transport myself to HOLMFIRTH sometime & stroll the Dales.
So TREASURE it my dear Brits.............it is truly a CLASSIC!!!!!!!!
As a fellow American who has also given up on such infinitely stale variety, I'll second you! Also, my roots go back to Yorkshire, so it's a fun little reminder of my heritage!

At the risk of sounding like a heretic, I think the last few seasons have become tired, stale and not that funny. I still watch it everyday,but I dont laugh as much.
shareWell, it's definitly changed. I'm sure partly because that wonderful group energy of "the three" just isn't there now. Still, like you, I watch because of love the people. But the thought of Cleggy and Truly's scenes getting cut down to indoor or less, kind of makes me depressed...maybe too much. :(

Most people cannot laugh at themselves. The show is life as it is supposed to be lived, with joy and fun.

Saw one episode years ago, and was hooked.
Some of the earliest episodes make me grateful the show evolved as it did.
No it isn't the "Go straight for the belly laugh, Smack the viewer between the eyes with what passes as humor these days".
It is honest human humor.

My mother used to watch Coronation Street in the 1960s. She later became addicted to "Days of Our Lives."
I found both equally depressing.
Watch series 7 if you want to get it.

shareI didn't care for it at first, but my husband loved it. But after awhile it grew on me, and now I watch it even when he isn't around. It is a warm place to visit, predictable when very little in life can be. And some of the phrases! "When did he become fluent in rubbish?" springs to mind. Of course, I am only up to 2003, so....
