To be honest I think it is just one of those things that they created, just to add comedy in some scenes, and a sense of mystery to the contents identity. You know, something for the viewer to discuss and wonder about. I don't think even the cast and crew of the show know what it is. Because I bet they never even planned on making it something, just have it there to make the viewer wonder what it is. It seems to be working too.
