the last year...

...whats up with the new opening credits? they stink. the blurry edged freeze frame. boo! and where's crocker and the crew? (ok i have too much time on my hands)

Funny, I just posted about that on another thread.

I usually am against such a dramatic change in theme music and visuals for a TV series -- continuity in series TV is important, and this kind of change tends to convey a certain desperation. (And the original is usually better anyway).

But I have to make an exception for KOJAK. I think the final season's new musical theme and design are great (and much better than the original).

It's just so very, very '70s:

I really like the music (definitely late 70's) but the graphics have too many kojaks! give me some Stavros at least (I guess they really wanted people to know it was telly)

Actually, I first thought the new theme & design was from the first season because it had that early-'70s feel more than late-'70s. LOL

The early-'70s had more of this fresh melancholy flavor than the latter part of the decade. Plus, back when I was a kid, I only saw Season 2 thru 4 -- I'd never seen S1 or S5.

So I was startled to see it was actually the fifth season from 77/78!

lol, best thing is the shot of kojak and his very cool car-phone!

The letters flashing across the screen with moments of silence during the opening credits (as well as the shot of Kojak with a wide-collared shirt and no tie) screams disco era to me. I hated the new opening the first time I saw it, but it's grown on me over time. However, the Billy Goldenberg theme with the opening from seasons 1-4 is the better one; in contrast it's not as tied to a particular moment in time.

You were not the only one. Watching it on MeTV I heard the changed theme and hit "Info" on my cable, expecting to see that it was the first season. I was spurprised when it said 1978. The theme (and the stories) really went down hill that last season. Should have quit at 4.

Truer words were never spoken! I've seen a few of the last season episodes on youtube and they are awful! The one about the horse was so bad, it was unwatchable because there wasn't any mystery and there was a lot of cutsy attempts at humor which made the guest actors seem cartoonish and completely unrealistic. The gritty atmosphere was gone and Savalas was so tired, he seemed to be just going through the motions.Even the music was bad. Apparently the formula had grown stale and everyone involved wasn't inspired enough to come up with something new that would work.
