Kojak's car
Does anyone know, what car Kojak drives in the first season? I only know, that it must be a Buick, but which one exactly?

shareafter a few inquiries on the internet, I have learned that it is a Buick Regal, but not sure how many year models they used
shareLooks like it was a 68' Buick Regal.

Sorry, but I dont think so.. it was a 1973 model
shareIt was a 1973 Century
sharefunny thing you should mention that, i just thought the other day that it would be fun to check out the kojak movies from the mid 1980's, early 90's (i got them on tape.), to see how much has changed from the 1970's series.
i saw your legs and i started to drool,
i was hooked like a fool,
i got tempted by your sexy eyes,
and the tempature just went higher by your inviting smile,
your smooth way of talking, and the sexy tone in your voice,
made me hear the other ladies, as nothing but noise,
i dropped at your feet, and i turned into glew,
now there is nothing i can do, i'm forever hooked on you.
No, it was a brown 1974 Buick Century. There was a 1973 model used in the first 2 episodes of the first season (the grille, taillights & bumper were different). However, he stayed with the brown '74 throughout the series run, except for some shot on location in NYC that used a orange/tan '75 Century. And Crocker mostly drove a 1974 Century too, only it was blue. I'll get even more arcane. In the first season, Kojak's car had whitewalls and each following year they were blackwalls.
Footnote to Kojak's Buick: When the series was on the air in the 70's Corgi Toys did a nice model of the car with a figure of Kojak behind the wheel firing a pistol presumably at a fleeing perp. The model was recently re-issued (about 3/4 years ago) and can be found quite frequently on Ebay at varying prices. One thing to note: I believe the diecast model was based on the first season '73 Buick Regal and the color scheme is almost a tan color (like the version of the car Savalas drove in NYC). The 'main' Buick was almost a Chocolate Brown in color -- based on viewing the DVDs.
shareI drove the exact same car in the 1980's from my parents in 1986 it was a two door instead of a four...same color 1975...everytime I watch I see the car on Kojak I cant believe it. My ol friend smashed into it last day of high school 1988 and was totaled
shareDoes anyone know a specific episode featuring the orange/tan car? That is the one I remembered (probably because I had the toy that came out in the 70s and it was a Regal painted in that color). I recently re-discovered Kojak re-runs on a local channel, and was suprised to see the brown Century, when what I remembered was an orange Regal. Thanks.

shareA car so damn fugly, not even KOJAK could make it cool! :-p
shareFugly car? I beg to differ, I think it's damn nice! A cop car can't be too flashy, yet the Century has a certain coolness and is "right" for the that golden age of carmaking.
shareI think he meant the Saperstein's orange/yellow car.
Jack's not dead! Jack would never die without telling me, first!
Odd thing about Kojak's car: most -- if not all -- detective's cars were unmarked models of the current stock of patrol cars in the NYPD. So in reality, Kojak should have been driving either a big-ass Plymouth or a Ford (ala Crocker and Sapperstein's undercover car).
I don't believe I EVER saw a Buick Century in the NYPD fleet.
Kojak drove a 73 Century and a 74 one.they had the Buick torquey 455 C.I V8 in them.you can see the 455 badges under where it said'Century' on the lower front fenders.Bobby drove a black 73 or 74 Ford Galaxie 500 police issue that prob had the 429 Big Block Ford in it Sapperstines car was a black 73 Plymouth Fury I police issue and most likely
had a 440 Big Block Mopar engine in it.
I think in '73 ford replaced the 429 with the 460.
shareNo the 429 was used through 74 as well I think in 75 was when they bored and stroked the 429 into the 460
shareActually, you're correct about the availability of the 429, but not the exclusivity... Both "385-series" engines were introduced during the 1968 model year, and the 429 was phased out somewhere between 1973 & 1975.
It is called product placement, and Buick was a sponsor.
