The final confrontation (Spoilers)

PRIEST: Yeah, that’s right. I know your name. I know all about you. Your wife, that big-legged daughter of yours… and even that fa**ot son. Do it. Yeah, go ahead. I’m to the point that I ain’t afraid to die. But you kill me, and you and your whole ****ing family die.

I love the first and only confrontation between Priest and Deputy Commissioner Reardon.

Just before he died, Scatter gave Priest an envelope on Reardon and his family. But I gather that the information was not meant to be blackmail material or wasn't good enough because Scatter couldn't save his life with what he had.

But Priest made a point of relaying to the Deputy that he knew about the son.

But I was wondering what did Priest mean with "that big-legged daughter." Is the daughter supposed to be unattractively fat and Priest just wants to call attention to that?

I have seen this film at least one hundred times, including going to the
theatre during it's initial release back in 1972.

I always thought Priest was just being insulting when he called Reardon's son
a *beep* Your post really makes sense, because during that era, if you were
a high profile politico/powerhouse, it would be a huge scandal and black mark
against the family name or his professional reputation, if he had a gay son.

Now the reference to the big-legged daughter, was purely sexual, and a
gesture of disrespect to this powerful white man about his maybe "virginal"
daughter, by a dangerous, salacious black man.....if you get my drift!

In African-American/Black Culture, black men consider women with big pretty shapely legs as being sexy and desireable.

Thanks for the explanation.

I would never have guessed that the remark was meant to be a sexual threat.

I know this is hella old but I never took "big legged daughter" to be meant as an insult. But more of an 'i know your family for real, I'm not bluffing'. It's easy to say he had a son and daughter but to point out characteristics like your gay son and your big legged daughter meant he knows who your family actually is
