would this silliness get nominated for four Oscars today ??

Two leading role noms and a best director for a silly play like movie.

Now I see why you didn't like it. It was "play like". Maybe you'll appreciate it when you're older.

No, it probably wouldn't get nominated for anything today. Hollywood has gone to the dogs.

reply

Not being able to tell the difference between theater and filmmaking? Perhaps you are the one who should get older.

reply

Film is theatre… unless you’re talking about documentaries.

reply

No, it is not. Just like theatre is not opera. They are different types of medium.

reply

Opera is literally theatre you fool. Is this the hill you want to die on?

reply

Theres no hill one, only a molehill you cant get past due to your inability to differentiate the mediums.

reply

I’m not the one who can’t tell that opera and theatre are the same thing you dumb turd

Limited locations, limited characters, not a lot a scene changes. I knew nothing about this movie going in and was quickly able to guess it was based on a play. For the record I liked it but you've got to admit that play based films have to live up to a higher standard of story and acting since the can't wow you with effects or globe trotting locales

While I'm not the biggest fan of the film (Caine's performance is the best thing about it IMO) it was well-received in its day and I think was seen as an Oscar contender from the start. Manciewicz and Olivier's names attached to the film guaranteed it a certain prestige, I guess.

Interestingly, it was the first film in which the entire cast was nominated for Oscars.

reply

I thought it was quaint.

>nominated for four Oscars
