The real Popeye Doyle
This was a late-night TV mainstay when I was a nipper but I hadn't realised until seeing it again recently that Marvin's boss is played by Eddie 'Rusty' Egan, the real-life cop who was the inspiration for Gene Hackman's Popeye Doyle in The French Connection, and who incidentally appeared in said movie as... a cop! Yes, I am a nerd. And yes, it was a pleasure seeing this underrated seventies crime classic again for the first time in 20-odd years.
