Once the captain heard from Athens, about the seaquake, he should have..

.. he should have slowed down.
It might not have mattered but they could have filled the ballast tanks a little?

I remember reading about a ship's captain who knew he was about to be hit by a very large wave. One of the things he did to prepare was drop anchor so it was suspended under the ship. That lowered the center of gravity a bit more and helped keep him from capsize.

It was all Captain Harrison's fault. The captain should have had Linarcos thrown in the brig early on for causing so much interference during the passage. Instead Harrison allowed Linarcos to dictate to him.

Linarcos was the owner of the ship, not the captain and Linarcos had already threatened to relieve the captain of his command if he did not obey the order to go faster. It was Linarcos fault all the way.
