Excuse me: An actress named 'Joy Bang'??!

That must rank as the single most hilarious and, I don't know what, name in movie history. At least producers would instantly know what she could have been up to... ;-)

Hey, What ever gets you on screen, right?

Actually, Joy Bang was part of Andy Warhol's NYC Exploding Plastic Inevitable troupe. Like Ultra Violet, she parlayed her "underground" success into a few, sporadic Hollywood bit parts. The late 60's, early 70's Hollywood scene was quixotic.

this is probably why Warhol Superstar VIVA is in this film.
Woody must have had a real affinity for the Warhol crowd.

Woody must have had a real affinity for the Warhol crowd.

Somehow that just feels wrong.

There was indeed an actress named "Joy Bang" but her name doesn't mean what you think it does. At that time a "joy bang" meant a light hit of heroin, or perhaps some other drug, taken by an occasional user. The idea being that one could take the occasional "joy bang" and not get hooked.

reply

I had no idea! I've heard the expression before but didn't realize it referred to a hit of heroin or something else. Thanks!

Joy's a very good friend of mine and you "film buffs" are all wrong. She was married for a short time and when she was quite young to a guy whose last name was Bang. That's all - nothing salacious, nothing to do with drugs, nothing weird, it wasn't a chosen stage name and she definitely was NOT a porn actress as I've seen claimed by several other "experts" on the Net. As a matter of interest, she's still pretty damn gorgeous.

reply

Nonono, I'm married to Joy. My family name is Gnab. She thought it funny back then to spell it backwards, in order to protect our privacy.

reply

There is an actress named Mink Stole who was in a few John Waters films if I'm not mistaken

reply

It seems she was born Joy Weiner so you might consider her married name an improvement.
