Ada kills herself and attempts to kill Niles at the end, but before that she could have taken two seconds to set the record straight. That other guy was framed and will be put to death now. Thanks Babooshka.

I think that Ada isn't really thinking things rationally through at this point (seriously, who could?) or she might have understood how the following events would appear to the world, i.e., who makes it out alive and who was responsible.

It definitely earns its stripes as a horror film from the outcome.

In the novel, Mr. Angelini is not arrested but ironically finds the "things" contained in the tobacco tin hidden in the barn. This leads to Niles becoming institutionalized.

Yes, much like To Kill A Mockingbird, this film ends with an innocent man being punished. No wonder the two films were made by the same director.
