Influence of Psycho
I haven't read every post on this board, so I may be repeating a previous observation, and, if so, I apologize. My take on this film is that it owes much to Hitchcock. For the better part of the movie, Niles has at least part of his own personality that is distinguishable from Holland's, although he can "become" Holland frequently, as when he visits the old lady. But by the end of the picture, Holland has completely taken over whatever was left of Niles. As Simon Oakland said about Norman in the entirely unnecessary "explanation" at the end of Psycho, there were two personalities at war in Niles, and in the end, the stronger personality won. Thanks for all the enthusiastic discussion of one of my favorite films, and Happy Holidays! For a newer, and I believe much inferior, update on this theme, see the new German import [/i [i]Goodnight Mommy.
