Best Horror Film
Best Horror Film Ever Made. I know film.
shareIt was released way before its time.(1972)
Could a movie like this released be at this day and age, where everything is a cgi background. Would people of this generation understand what this is all about????
"I love the smell of napalm in the morning. The smell, you know, it smells like[sniffing],Victory."
Yes, it was ahead of its time. Could this be released today? Not likely. The slow-simmering pace and gradual foreshadowing would test the audience's patience today. What makes it so good is that it almost sneaks up on the viewer and the true horror is in contrast to the simple, wholesome setting and seemingly harmless boys. What an ending. Nothing is tacked on, no cop outs, no loose ends. Every detail has a purpose.
Most younger people have no idea this film was truly original and innovative when it hit. My folks saw it together while they were dating. Many modern movies have borrowed from this one: The Good Son, The Sixth Sense, Orphan, Insidious, etc. Anyone catching it for the 1st time this last decade will probably see it coming or figure it out, not realizing the films they've seen in theaters use similar ideas and borrowed a lot but came much later. A twist has become commonplace and audiences now expect one.
This is a 'small' film but it is quite unique and the underlying richness would be gone if made today. We'd be left with a shell of what we have...I hope it's never remade.
Oh no. I think a film like this is much too sophisticated for audiences of today. It would need to either have loud jump scares every five minutes or gallons of blood. This film relied solely on story and character development. Audiences of today would find it "slow" and "boring." Horror films with story and character development are a thing of the past. However, I think both of those things are what give this film it's charm and because of that, it is one of my absolute favorites.
Come, fly the teeth of the wind. Share my wings.
Agreed.
shareWhat makes this a horror film....?
Seems to me it's a psychological suspense movie...
Swing away, Merrill....Merrill, swing away...share
The best horror films are psychological - they get under your skin (for decades...) I mean, once you stab the vampire through the heart with a stake, shoot the werewolf with silver, kill Freddy Krueger (for the umpteenth time), he's gone...and you could always tell he/they were monsters.
But if it's the sweet kid from up the street whose twin died?
No fate but what we make. -Terminator II
A good director could speed it up a little bit without mangling the story. I think it could be remade for today's audiences by someone like Amenabar and it would be good.

The Mulligan movie had some flaws but in general I like it a lot. The slowness doesn't bother me and the Udnarvoky twins turn in an excellent performance, but the slowness probably would bother modern audiences if it were remade. I wasn't denigrating Mulligan, just saying that if it is ever remade, they need to get someone good, not a modern hack.
Sheesh!
