STILL SHOCKING 40 years later ! (SPOILERS) Wine barrel scene

I don't really consider this a horror movie myself. I thought it was going to be one of those "creepy child" type horror films like The Omen or Bloody Birthday, but it's really not too scary or shocking until the last 20 minutes or so. To me, it's more of a lighthearted drama (with supernatural themes) about a family in an old fashioned country setting told through the eyes of a child. After the baby is brought home, then it shifts to a darker horror tone.

I think other horror fans expect another Omen, Bad Seed, or Bloody Birthday. They want it to be a straightforward horror movie but get bored when they discover it isn't. I was disappointed the first time I saw it as well because I thought it would be the same as other horror movies I've seen. But I think it is a very unique film that doesn't feel like any other I know of and once I realized that then I could enjoy it.

But anyways, I think the scene where they find the baby is one of the most shocking and upsetting scenes I've ever seen in a movie. I don't know how I would've reacted if I found something like that in real life. It's hard for me to see how anyone could watch that scene and not be affected by it.

I watched this on t.v years ago when I was a little kid, that scene was scorched in my memory forever. I've spoken about this movie to other people, but no one has even heard of it, lol. I ended up getting the book out of the school library back then too, it was an excellent read.

BTW, the most horrifying murder scene I've ever seen and it's also in a little known movie called Heavenly Creatures. Just so horrific and I've watched plenty of horror and crime movies, old and the latest, but that one scene will stay with you.

The barrel scene was incredibly shocking! The actress who played Ada was so convincing, too. I could feel her despair and self-blame through the tv screen. Crazy stuff!
