Flying scene - how did they do that?

Just saw the blu-ray. Interesting movie - looked great for something from 1972. I was amazed at the scene where Niles sees through the bird's eyes. Rock steady flying video but no stabilized camera mounts back then. Anyone know how they did it?

I'm not sure but it reminded me of the scene where the locust took Father Lamont to go see Komumo in Exorcist II: The Heretic which was made in 1977.

Eh, all I can tell you is that I saw this in a theater when it first came out and that flying scene was awesome. Dizzying, in fact. And I suspect it was meant to be a bit unnerving. I went into this sucker cold. Boy. It looked so idyllic at first. Then, with the flying, it looked rapturous. Er, then.....["Oh... My... God."] (if you've seen it, you KNOW that quote)

I was impressed by the aerial photography as well. The sequence is actually quite breathtaking. Such a sequence could easily be done by way of drone photography today. Compare that sequence with The Shining's(1980) opening title sequence. Same fluidity of movement. The only thing I could imagine from that era, would be a glider plane with some type of fixed camera rig.
