The Other vs. Rosemary's Baby

Did the film based on Tryon's screenplay surpass the one which inspired him for any of you? I'm meaning Rosemary's Baby. Which film did you all enjoy more between the two? Of course, this board is for 'The Other', so I'll post the same question on the RB board, to be fair.

Note: I have seen rare instances in which a competitor gets more votes than its host in a movie vs. movie poll. Last I checked, I believe Candyman nosed out Hellraiser on its own board--just saying :-).

the other, naturally. RB is a good, scarey film and i like it, but as far as im concerned the OTHER is one of the best all time horror films, Period :) the other two i think are great are the shining, and Halloween .

Both films ar masterfully done, but I'd have to give the edge to The Other. As great as Rosemary's Baby is, I think Polanski does atmospheric horror better in some of the films he made before (like Repulsion) and after (like Macbeth)--whereas with The Other, Robert Mulligan combined all of his artistic talents into what very well might have been the best film of his underrated career.

My thoughts exactly! I do like Rosemary's Baby, but out of all Polanski's films Repulsion resonates with me the most. I find myself in the minority on this as RB seems more popular. For The Other, Mulligan seemed to hone everything to his sharpest.

The more recent thrillers I struggle to watch, the more I appreciate The Other. Newer films fail to BUILD or FORESHADOW as well as this film. Nothing seems out of place or implausible as presented. Even if it unsettles, the foundation has been laid so we can retrace and see the hints.

If I had to choose between the two of them on a rainy day, I would probably choose Rosemary's Baby.

Both are some of the best horror films ever made - and some of the more understated, leisurely ones likewise, in the sense that both are very low on overt scares or setpieces typical for the genre. RB is perfect though while The Other seemed to hit a few questionable notes here and there... but it`s sort of unfair to compare since I`ve seen RB 13 times and this one only once.

Both are brilliant and among the best horror films ever made, but if I had to choose I'd say Rosemary's Baby.

I like them both and they each have their different strengths and weaknesses. But I'd have to say "Rosemary's Baby," for me, because the Son of Satan is just a lot scarier than an evil twin.

I saw this movie when it first came out in 1972, and I remember very clearly the lobby poster which featured a frantic Niles and the tagline, "Holland where's the baby?" The baby doesn't really have that much to do with the plot, so looking back, I think the tagline was a deliberate attempt to capitalize on the popularity of RB. The two films were only four years apart.

Well let's see; "Rosemary's Baby" is a classic, and an absolute masterpiece of the genre..and "The Other" is a piece of forgettable trash..not much of a comparison.
