After the Night Stalker why in God's name would Vinchenzo even doubt Carl for a second about the night strangler ?
Even in private he could have backed Carl and explained why he couldn't print the story , but to disbelieve completly after the night stalker is a bit to much to swallow!
in the end he did come through for Carl and was going to publish the story (He got five copies off the press). He was stopped by higher ups and was fired himself. Ergo why he was in the car with Carl as he was leaving town.

shareI think Vincenzo did know that what Kolchak discovered was true. But the authorities to cover up the facts (and possibly their ineptitude) had to suppress the story.
Just as in the vampire case in Las Vegas the authorities did the same thing. They covered up the facts in order to prevent mass hysteria. And maybe the embarassment of having to come out and say that they had been chasing a vampire.
Becuase if they couldn't prove that this vampire existed then that would make them an object of ridicule.
