How did this do at the box office when it was released?
I was just wondering.

Interesting Question...
I'm not sure. However, it was released before Bronson struck "super stardom" with "Death Wish". "The Mechanic" had both foreign and domestic releases. I suppose it must have done well in the foreign territories as I beleive CB was very popular overseas at that time.
"The Mechanic" was re-released after "Death Wish" as "Killer Of Killers" with the trailer (which is on "The Mechanic" DVD) butchered up to make it look like a vigilante actioner. Perhaps this was an effort to capitalize on Bronson's US success and the public's acceptance of his vigilante image.
The fact that "The Mechanic" was re-released under a different moniker after "Death Wish"'s success seems to imply that "The Mechanic" didn't do so well at the box office. Perhaps this was an attempt by UA/MGM to re-coup their production expenses.
I think IMDb Pro may have the actual box office statistics you are looking for.
