After reading many of the comments here, it seems I am not alone in that this was my childhood faves. After a recent viewing, I can totally see why it appealed to me as youngster. Not quite as taken with it as I was when I was young, but still a fun film. 7/10
I gave it 7 out of 10 too, but that's still a good rating. And a lot of the movies I loved as a kid don't quite seem the same to me as an adult. Of course, some I like even more!
"The Mechanic" is oddly nostalgic! I watched it when I was about 13 one saturday afternoon and was completely fascinated by it. Now having seen it recently, I smiled when a scene that never left my memory played again. When Bishop takes McKenna to the martial arts exhibition and discusses the old master vs. the new master. I'd forgotten which film that came from, but it turned out to be from The Mechanic. The fact that a movie about hitmen qualifies as warm nostalgia says just how up in the clouds I was as a kid...I guess you could say "I lived in my own mind"!
I first saw "The Mechanic" as a kid as well. I watched it with my father when it was shown on TV. I was facinated by the story and characters and for as much as a 10 year old could understand the sub-text I really liked the movie.
Years later I re-watched the film on a net-flix rental and was still blown away by Bronson's portrayal of Arthur Bishop. It was as good if not better than I remembered it, and remains my all time favorite Bronson film.
I also enjoyed the great musical score by Jerry Fielding and the scropt by Lewis John Carlino.
Hilarious, I too watched this when I was around 12 with my Dad while on tv one night. I haven't seen it in at least a decade so I've got it on my netflix list. I remember the ball of wax to strengthen the grip. Since this movie I've always bought grippers and stuff like that. Can't wait to see it again.
...what a coinsidence...I too was intrigued by the ball of wax. I also had the grippers...I was studying piano at the time and my teacher recommended them for developing strength. I was about 12 then as well and thought the grippers were cool. By the way I like your screen name...by any chance are you from the Fairfax District of Los Angeles CA? Hope you enjoy "The Mechanic" when your NetFlix order arrives.
