It was real, which got the producers in trouble with the Screen Actors Guild. They made the creature become a member of the guild, pay dues, get an agent, the whole nine yards. It said to hell with this, and went back to the swamp. Never made another picture, a real shame.

Although I hear there have been no shortage of offers over the years to lure it back to the screen - apparently it was so pissed when it was expected to do a screen test for Peter Jackson's Kong that the deal was cancelled.
