I just watched this for the first time, and although I can see how people might love this movie, I cannot see where anyone on earth, even if they had never seen a movie before, could have been scared by it. Bigfoot never does anything to anyone! He only goes after animals! The people are the scary ones, freaking out at the drop of a hat and shooting their rifles at anything that moves, ... hell I was scared FOR Bigfoot, not scared OF him....

But, even if I accept that there could have been scary scenes somewhere in this movie, maybe if someone just really, really wanted to be scared... even then, the "Travis Crabtree" song would have to have thwarted their efforts. I almost DID roll on the floor laughing my ass off, so to speak, at that song. I do think it would be a good song for a garage band to cover.

Yes, this was a wonderful film, shot on excruciatingly bad film stock, with the most harmless, benign monster ever, bizarre musical sensibility, and full of heart and a love of a hometown.

I think that if you read most posts of those who were scared by LOBC, they were kids when they first saw it. I was in my mid-20s and saw it on late night tv; it didn't scare me but it scared the heck out of my wife because we lived about 3/4 mile from woods and a shallow river in central Georgia and she was from Chicago. I loved and still love the atmosphere of the movie. And yes, "Travis Crabtree" is ridiculously camp, but I love the banjo and harmonica.

He always follows the creek.

Bigfoot today is old news. We've been bombarded with so many fake photos and stories that it's not a serious issue any longer. Heck, he's even in beef jerky commercials. But in the early 70's it was different. I was 7 years old.
That's the point of it being scary. It was scary then. ALL of my friends freaked out over it...then.
So for many people today, looking back to then...it was terrifying.
The comment about "Being scared FOR Bigfoot and not OF him" was pretty funny though.

I'll tell you, when I watch the Patterson film, I do think that the creature is real.

Watch the version that's adjusted for stabilization, you might change your mind.

The stabilized version brings out more detail to support its being real.

You know Nothing, Jon Snow.

The original film still exists, and has been examined for alterations and film tricks. An FBI film expert has certified it authentic. What you see on the first-gen copies of the film is actually what the camera "saw". A new first-gen copy has been produced and is available online.
