What type of rifle was Frank Harlan's aka Robert Duvall?

In Joe Kidd Robert Duvall .... Frank Harlan takes out a lever action rifle when in the hotel and shows it to Joe Kidd ... Clint Eastwood. Does anyone know what kind it was and anything about the scope on it?

reply

I believe it was a Savage Model 99, I don't know about the scope.

Savage Model 99 is correct. The 99 was in response to Winchester bringing out their 1895 that could handle smokeless power and more powerful cartridges. It was a lever action with a built in box magazine and could have been chambered in .300 Savage. The scope almost looks too modern for the time period of the movie, especially compared to the long scope on the single shot rifle carried by one of Harlan's (Duvall's) men.

The 1894 Winchester .30WCF(.30-.30Win.) Was also smokeless powder cartridge,The 1895 just had a heavier reciever, box mag,and higher powered amunition, such as the .30-.40Krag etc. The 1895 was produced for the military and sportsman.
The US Govt. only issude military ammo.(.45-.70..45-.60,.45Colt,.45S&W,.30-.40Krag,etc) to local Govts. So the 1895 was popular with the Rangers (Texas,Arizona, etc.)But I do love the Savage.
Sorry for digressing,I love this stuff:)
