What book or short story was this based on?

What book or short story was this movie based on? It seems to me as if the bad guy in the short story 3:10 to Yuma was named Jim Kidd. I was trying to figure out if Joe was related. Both stories were written by the same author.

He wrote an original screenplay for this.

Yodzingie is right on target. The great author Elmore "Dutch" Leonard made a brief foray into screenwriting as well as carving out solid crime and Western novels. JOE KIDD is among the movies that Dutch had dished out.
