Mingo The Sniper

Spoiler:

I liked the character of Mingo. He wasn't a mean spirited sort, just a gun for hire. Never hassled Joe Kidd. He was good at his job and didn't take any particular joy in killing people, it was just a job. He did take some pride in his marksmanship.

His long range death was well filmed. Mingo's reactions were great; first shock, then surprise as he realized what had happened, then his lips mouthed something at Joe Kidd just before he fell off the mountain.

Under other circumstances, he and Joe Kidd could have been friends. They had much in common. They were men of few words, good marksmen and only killed as part of their job, not for pleasure.

I also enjoyed the subtle differences in Harlan's men -- they were not all the same cookie cutter bad guys. Mingo actually showed some manners when he & Kidd were introduced. Roy Gannon was an interesting character in that he showed humor as well as menace, and had a role as Harlan's Spanish interpreter. Meanwhile, Lamar the cold-blooded killer was just a dumb jerk.
